U-Con/Pogonip Trail

What: Single track muni riding, beginner and advanced options. Bring a lunch, or go out to lunch in Santa Cruz after the ride.

When: 9:30 am–1:00 pm

Where: Dirt parking lot off Highway 9.

Driving Directions:

From West Santa Cruz: head south on Highway 1 (aka: Mission St), and turn LEFT onto Highway 9
From East Santa Cruz/Aptos: head north on Highway 1 and turn RIGHT onto Highway 9.

From the start of Highway 9 (at the intersection of Highway 1 & River St & Highway 9):
Drive approx. 3 miles on highway 9. You will pass a large sign on the left that says "Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park".
Look for a large dirt parking lot on the right hand side with a lot of cars. Park.

WARNING: PARKING IS LIMITED! Carpool if you can. If you can't find a spot in the main parking area, drive further up (or back) and find somewhere to park.

Ride Directions:
This ride is tricky, so you will want to follow the leaders

For beginners, this trail can easily be made into an "out and back" ride. If you are tired, you can turn around and ride back downhill at anytime. Advanced riders will want to do a loop.

Starting from the dirt parking lot, we will proceed to backtrack next to the road on a small single track. It cuts across the road onto the "Pogonip" trial (it isn't marked until you get to the top). Eventually, it hits a wider trail uphill towards the U-CON trail. The U-CON is a nice switchback up the hill; beginners may want to walk this section. Once at the top, we will follow the fire road or single track to some various trails by UCSC. Beginners can ride back on the U-CON trail, and advanced riders can follow the leaders.
